BRAD EYRE
(b. 1968, Ottawa, Canada)
Brad Eyre is a contemporary Canadian artist whose abstract practice explores the dynamic tension between chaos and control through a highly process-driven approach. Departing from traditional painterly methods, Eyre rejects brushwork in favour of direct physical interaction with his medium, manipulating acrylic paint through pressure—compressing pigment between surfaces and separating them in deliberate, controlled motions. This technique generates organic, unpredictable forms shaped by variables such as force, movement, and timing.
While Eyre carefully plans his colour palettes and initial compositions, the resulting imagery resists full control. Each work is inherently unique, as the process cannot be replicated, producing fluid, complex patterns that exist between intention and chance. This balance between unpredictability and structure is central to his practice.
Following this intuitive phase, Eyre introduces a secondary, analytical process. The painted surfaces are methodically segmented into geometric units and reassembled into structured compositions. This act of reconstruction imposes order onto the initial spontaneity, creating a compelling visual dialogue between gestural abstraction and formal precision.
Eyre’s compositions often evoke natural phenomena—such as seascapes and botanical forms—through the movement and interaction of colour rather than direct representation. His geometric frameworks stabilize and reinterpret these organic references, translating natural rhythms into constructed visual systems that invite intuitive viewer engagement.
Based in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Eyre brings over three decades of experience in the cultural sector to his practice. He studied at the University of Toronto and further developed his understanding of visual language during his time at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. His professional background includes contributions to prominent institutions such as the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, MOCCA (now MOCA Toronto), and the City of Toronto.
Eyre’s work has been widely exhibited and is held in numerous private collections, appealing to collectors who value abstraction that merges emotional immediacy with conceptual rigor. His paintings offer both a striking visual presence and a nuanced exploration of perception, materiality, and the evolving relationship between order and chance.
