Daniel Solomon’s work is defined by its vibrant use of colour, dynamic abstract forms, and richly layered compositions that explore the interplay between gesture, structure, and space.
Daniel Solomon (b. 1945, Topeka, Kansas) is a Toronto-based painter and sculptor whose vibrant abstract works have helped shape the language of Canadian modernism for over five decades. Born in 1945 in Topeka, Kansas and raised in Oregon, Solomon began his creative journey studying architecture at the University of Oregon before relocating to Toronto in 1967—a move that marked the beginning of a long and influential career in Canada’s art world.
Solomon quickly became a key figure in the city’s cultural landscape, joining the Isaacs Gallery stable and later exhibiting with the David Mirvish Gallery. As part of the “bridge generation” of Toronto abstractionists, his work formed a vital link between the groundbreaking experimentation of Painters Eleven and the bold directions taken by later modernist painters.
Known for his fearless use of colour and mastery of complex pictorial space, Solomon’s art merges lyrical expression with formal rigor. Across paintings, watercolours, and sculpture, he explores a visual language that is at once intuitive and intellectually rich—making his work deeply rewarding for collectors and connoisseurs alike.
Solomon has exhibited widely across Canada, the U.S., and Europe, with solo shows at major public institutions such as the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. His works are held in prestigious collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, and the Royal Bank of Canada. Public commissions include a landmark mural on Toronto’s Flatiron Building and sculptural installations at 13th Street Winery in Niagara.
As a long-time Professor of Art at OCAD University, Solomon has also shaped generations of emerging artists. Today, his practice remains as vital and forward-looking as ever—offering collectors a chance to engage with a legacy of bold innovation and enduring influence.
