Paul Sloggett’s art merges painterly intuition with geometric precision, constructing vivid, architectonic compositions that challenge perception and resonate with a deep sense of spatial and emotional intelligence.
Paul Sloggett, AOCA, RCA (b. 1950, Campbellford, Ontario, Canada), is a pivotal figure in Canadian abstraction and a recognized member of the 'third generation' of abstract painters in Canada. A graduate of the Ontario College of Art in 1973, Sloggett emerged during a transformative moment in Canadian art history—when a new wave of disciplined, conceptually driven painters began shaping the postmodern landscape. Influenced early on by Jack Bush, Frank Stella, and Kenneth Noland, Sloggett merges painterly intuition with geometric precision, constructing complex visual architectures that resonate with both formal clarity and emotional depth.
Rooted in modernist rigor yet uniquely personal, his work explores spatial tension and the picture plane as object. “I’ve always felt as if I was building paintings rather than painting pictures,” he explains—a principle echoed in Roald Nasgaard’s Abstract Painting in Canada, which highlights Sloggett’s collage-like spatial illusions as defining elements of his innovation. From his shaped canvases to his crystalline structures, his paintings channel the Constructivist ethos of “art as action” while embodying a musical syncopation that reflects his own experience as a drummer.
Sloggett’s early promise earned him an OCAD Teaching Assistantship under Royden Rabinowitch, leading to landmark exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. He has exhibited widely, from David Mirvish Gallery and Moore Gallery in Toronto, John Mann Gallery in St. Catharines to Hatch Gallery in Prince Edward County, and his site-specific installations have appeared in New York and Salt Lake City. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Canada Council Art Bank, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and numerous private collections across Canada, the U.S., and internationally.
Sloggett continues to evolve as an artist and mentor, and select works from the Mann Collection now offer collectors a rare opportunity to acquire pieces that embody his unique blend of historical insight, structural innovation, and deeply felt visual intelligence.
