Urban builds his dynamic paintings, layer upon layer, incorporating the traditions of still life and landscape, abstraction and realism.

David Urban (b. 1966, Toronto) is widely recognized as one of Canada’s leading contemporary painters, known for his bold fusion of abstraction and representation. With a career spanning over three decades, Urban’s work masterfully blends rhythmic geometries, lyrical brushwork, and a dynamic colour palette, drawing on a deep understanding of modernist traditions and the act of painting itself.

A true polymath—poet, musician, and scholar—Urban holds degrees in both English literature and fine art, including an MFA in Painting from the University of Guelph. His practice reflects a lifelong engagement with the intellectual and emotional possibilities of painting. His early works, often compared to Jonathan Lasker and early modernists like Cézanne, were quickly embraced by collectors, with his first solo show at Toronto’s Sable-Castelli Gallery selling out.

Urban’s paintings—found in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, and Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal—offer collectors a unique convergence of historical awareness and intuitive freedom. They navigate the tensions between figure and ground, control and improvisation, and invite reflection on sound, memory, and the imagination.

For discerning collectors, Urban's work is more than a visual statement—it’s an enduring exploration of the transformative power of art.
