SVETLANA TUROV
(b. 1972, USSR )
Svetlana Turov, professionally known as sFeltLana, is a Canadian Fiber Fine Artist whose immersive textile works occupy a compelling space between painting and sculpture. Through an innovative approach rooted in traditional felting practices and expanded through contemporary fine art methodologies, Turov creates richly layered compositions that challenge conventional perceptions of textile as craft and position fiber as a powerful medium of contemporary artistic expression. Working primarily with natural fibers—including wool and silk—Turov employs techniques such as wet felting, nuno felting, fabric painting, and freeform surface construction to build tactile, dimensional works distinguished by their depth, movement, and atmospheric presence. Her artworks transcend material expectations: at once painterly in composition and sculptural in structure, they invite close viewing and sensory engagement while exploring the emotional and symbolic language embedded within texture.
At the core of Turov’s practice is a dialogue between ancestral knowledge and contemporary innovation. Influenced by felting traditions passed down through her great-grandmother, she approaches fiber not simply as a material but as a vessel of memory, continuity, and transformation. Through this inherited foundation, she has developed a distinct visual language that reinterprets one of humanity’s oldest textile traditions through a contemporary lens. Turov frequently draws inspiration from landscapes shaped by movement and force—including the ocean, Niagara Falls, and elemental environments—capturing their rhythm, fragility, and enduring power. Rather than seeking literal representation, she distills these experiences into layered surfaces that evoke atmosphere, emotion, and the sensation of place. Her works often exist between realism and abstraction, creating spaces that feel simultaneously familiar and dreamlike.
Expanding beyond traditional textile practice, Turov integrates influences from painting, sculpture, performance, and material experimentation. This interdisciplinary approach allows her to create compositions that possess visual fluidity while maintaining structural presence. Through the transformation of soft fibers into enduring forms, she investigates themes of resilience, cultural identity, impermanence, and the evolving relationship between humanity and the natural world. A significant dimension of Turov’s practice lies in research and documentation. Her ongoing publishing projects examine Fiber Fine Art as an emerging contemporary language and preserve the techniques, philosophy, and artistic possibilities of the medium. Her limited-edition artist monograph, The Exquisite World of Fiber Fine Art by Svetlana Turov, developed in collaboration with specialists associated with the Hermitage State Museum, represents a notable contribution to the dialogue surrounding contemporary textile practice. Copies of the publication have been preserved within the Academic Library of the Hermitage, recognizing both the historical significance of felt traditions and Turov’s contemporary reinterpretation of them.
Recent projects further extend her engagement with historical textile cultures, including works informed by the imagery and construction of the ancient Pazyryk felted carpet. Rather than reproducing historical artifacts, Turov reimagines their visual language within contemporary fine art contexts—bridging archaeological memory with present-day material expression. Turov’s work has been exhibited in galleries, festivals, and cultural institutions across Canada and internationally. Her exhibitions include presentations at the Art Gallery of Ontario, World of Threads Festival, Propeller Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Burlington, and exhibitions in Canada and the United States. Her work is held in private collections throughout North America, South America, and Europe. As recognition for contemporary fiber practice continues to expand, Svetlana Turov stands among a growing generation of artists redefining the possibilities of textile-based art. Through her synthesis of tradition, innovation, and material sensitivity, she continues to establish Fiber Fine Art as a dynamic and evolving form within contemporary visual culture.
Artist Statement:
My practice explores the intersection of painting, sculpture, and textile through Fiber Fine Art. Working with natural fibers—primarily wool and silk—I create dimensional compositions using techniques such as nuno felting, wet felting, layering, and surface manipulation. Through these processes, I transform traditional textile methods into contemporary visual experiences that emphasize texture, movement, and emotional resonance. Nature serves as a continual source of inspiration. Rather than depicting landscapes literally, I seek to capture atmosphere, energy, and sensation through layered surfaces and organic forms. Rooted in historical fiber traditions yet guided by experimentation, my work explores how ancient techniques can evolve within contemporary fine art. Each piece invites close viewing and sensory engagement, encouraging reflection on material, memory, and our connection to the natural world.
