SIMON ZHANG
(b. 1956, Shanghai, China )
Simon Zhang is a Toronto-based artist and designer whose abstract practice reflects a lifelong dialogue between artistic intuition, disciplined process, and the transformative relationship between material and meaning. Working across mixed media, Zhang has developed a distinctive visual language that merges ink, rice paper, and acrylic through a methodology uniquely his own—an approach that positions abstraction as both an act of discovery and a deeply contemplative experience.
Originally from China, Zhang relocated to Canada in 1988, bringing with him formal training in visual design and an expansive creative perspective shaped by both Eastern and Western traditions. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Stage Design and, shortly after arriving in Toronto, joined the Fine Art Department at Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) as a visiting artist before continuing his studies in Environmental Design. This dual foundation in fine art and spatial design would become central to the development of his mature artistic vocabulary.
Alongside his artistic pursuits, Zhang spent decades working professionally within established architectural and interior design firms in Toronto and internationally. His experience in built environments cultivated a heightened sensitivity to composition, structure, atmosphere, and the emotional resonance of space—qualities that continue to inform his abstract works today. Having transitioned fully into his studio practice, Zhang now dedicates his time entirely to expanding and refining his artistic vision.
Since 1988, Zhang’s work has been exhibited internationally through solo exhibitions, group presentations, gallery representation, and art fairs across Canada and China. His paintings have reached audiences abroad and gained recognition in Europe, notably in Germany, where his work was featured and auctioned by Neumeister Auction House in 2011. His artworks are held in private collections across Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden, and the United States.
At the centre of Zhang’s practice is his defining artistic philosophy, Infusions—a conceptual framework that explores the tension and harmony between opposing forces: chaos and control, spontaneity and intention, freedom and structure. To realize this philosophy, Zhang developed a distinctive three-stage methodology known as the Paralleled Process, through which separate visual events converge into a unified composition.
Each work begins with the creation of two independent surfaces: richly textured acrylic compositions on canvas and spontaneous ink formations on delicate rice paper. These elements emerge separately through instinctive gestures and subconscious movement before entering a period of intentional selection and transformation. Fragments of the inked paper are then chosen, shaped, and integrated into the painted surface, creating layered compositions that preserve both immediacy and reflection.
Through this process, Zhang embraces duality not as opposition, but as synthesis. The final paintings retain the vitality of their initial spontaneous moments while revealing careful acts of composition and restraint. The resulting works evoke landscapes of memory and sensation rather than literal depictions of place.
Nature serves as Zhang’s enduring source of inspiration. Rather than reproducing the visible world, he responds to environmental experience—light, movement, texture, atmosphere, and shifting conditions—translating these sensations into abstract forms. His paintings become immersive spaces where external observation and internal reflection coexist.
By dissolving conventional boundaries between media and process, Simon Zhang creates works that invite contemplation and participation. Each painting stands as both a physical record of making and an open field of interpretation, connecting artist, viewer, and environment through an evolving language of abstraction.
Artist Statement:
My work explores the space between spontaneity and structure, instinct and intention. Working through my concept of Infusions, I create abstract compositions that emerge through a balance of intuitive action and thoughtful refinement. Rather than controlling every outcome, I embrace moments of unpredictability and allow unexpected relationships to form within the work. Inspired by experiences of atmosphere, movement, light, colour, texture, and the changing conditions of the natural world, I transform external sensations into abstract visual language. These impressions become a starting point for expressing internal responses rather than representing a specific place or image.
A meditative, Zen-like approach guides my process, helping preserve the energy and immediacy of each gesture while allowing space for reflection and resolution. Each painting becomes an exploration of transformation—where contrasting forces meet, interact, and ultimately find harmony. Through this process, I invite viewers to engage with the work as an open experience: one that encourages contemplation, discovery, and a personal connection beyond the surface of the image.
