Margaret Glew
(Born in Liverpool, UK | Lives and works in Toronto, Ontario, Canada)

Margaret Glew is a Canadian abstract painter known for her expressive, large-scale oil paintings that explore transformation through bold colour, gestural brushwork, and richly layered surfaces. Working within the lineage of Modernist abstraction, Glew’s work invites contemplation—each canvas functioning as both a physical presence and a meditative space.

With a practice spanning over 35 years, Glew’s paintings are driven by process and intuition. She works in oil, allowing each layer of paint to speak, shift, and build upon the last. Themes of birth, growth, decay, and renewal run throughout her work, which often reveals its history through ghosted marks and palimpsest-like textures. These qualities make her work especially appealing to collectors who value emotional depth and material complexity.

Glew has held numerous solo exhibitions across Canada, including at Engine Gallery and Edward Day Gallery in Toronto and SOPA Fine Arts in Kelowna. She was featured in the international exhibition Kindred Spirits: Exploring Abstract Expressionism Today, which traveled from Greenville, South Carolina to The Painting Centre in New York City. In 2022, she completed a month-long artist residency in Pouch Cove, Newfoundland. Her work is included in major public and corporate collections, such as the City of Toronto Archives, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Transamerica Life, and Dominion Ventures.

Margaret Glew’s practice continues to evolve, earning her a dedicated following among contemporary art collectors who seek powerful, emotive works that reward sustained engagement.
