This artist talk with Svetlana Turov explores the powerful resurgence of textile in contemporary fine art, where fibre-based practice is being redefined as a compelling visual language. Working with silk and wool, Turov creates layered, tactile works that unfold slowly—rewarding close looking and revealing meaning through texture, rhythm, and process.
At the heart of the conversation is the idea that material itself can carry narrative. In Turov’s practice, thread becomes language, repetition becomes structure, and making becomes meaning. Her work challenges the traditional divide between fine art and fibre fine art, inviting us to reconsider how textile has been valued within contemporary culture and institutions.
The discussion also situates this practice within a much longer lineage of human expression. From ancient textile traditions such as the Pazyryk discoveries to contemporary fibre art today, woven language has long carried both visual and conceptual significance across cultures and time. Rather than a departure from history, today’s fibre practices are part of an ongoing continuum of making and meaning.
Audiences are increasingly drawn to this work not only for its material presence, but for its sense of continuity, intention, and quiet relevance to contemporary ideas of sustainability and thoughtful making.
Threaded Narratives offers a rare opportunity to experience this evolving dialogue firsthand—and to hear directly from the artist shaping it.
