PRESS RELEASE: Michael Adamson - Systems & Trajectories
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, ON – September 2026 – Armstrong Fine Art Consulting is pleased to present Michael Adamson: Systems & Trajectories, a solo exhibition exploring the relationship between line, repetition, rhythm and optical vibration in the work of one of Canada’s distinctive contemporary painters.
Across multiple series, Adamson builds his paintings through the accumulation of individual strokes. Repeated, redirected and closely positioned lines begin to operate collectively, creating surfaces that can appear to pulse, shimmer and vibrate before the eye. Colour, direction, density and repetition create a dynamic tension between individual marks and the larger composition.
In some works, these gestures form recognizable systems—grids, chevrons, diamond structures and vertical fields. In others, densely layered strokes create complex surfaces where figure and ground begin to dissolve. The underlying structure remains present while the repetition of marks transforms it into an active optical experience.
Adamson’s confident use of impasto further intensifies the work. Whether applied in raised, deliberate strokes or with a squeegee-like tool, each gesture reflects the assured hand of an artist with decades of experience. There is a sense of control and intention in every mark, while the accumulated strokes create rhythm, movement and vibration across the surface.
At the heart of Systems & Trajectories is the transformation of the line: line becomes rhythm, rhythm becomes vibration, and vibration activates the painted surface.
Michael Adamson (b. 1971, Toronto) is a leading figure in contemporary Canadian painting whose work occupies a compelling space between abstraction and landscape. Known for vibrant colour, layered textures, grids, discs of pigment and horizon lines, his paintings balance structure with spontaneity.
His work has been exhibited extensively in Canada and internationally, including at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Gardiner Museum, Beaverbrook Art Gallery and OCAD Gallery. His paintings are held in significant public, corporate and private collections across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.
