Nature In Motion brings together the work of Karole Marois and Jill Sapiente—two Ontario-based painters whose practices explore the vitality, rhythm, and transformative power of the natural world. While distinct in approach, both artists share a commitment to capturing not only what is seen, but what is felt: the shifting energy of light, the movement of water, and the emotional resonance embedded within landscape.
At the core of this exhibition is the idea that nature is never still. It is in constant flux—changing with light, weather, season, and memory. Marois and Sapiente respond to this dynamism through highly physical and intuitive painting processes, where gesture, texture, and colour become vehicles for movement itself.
Karole Marois, approaches movement through a fluid and poetic lens. Rooted in her classical training and expansive career, her work often centers on water as both subject and metaphor. In her recent series, water becomes a carrier of memory, transformation, and continuity. Marois frequently integrates literary elements into her exhibitions, pairing painting with poetry to deepen the experiential dimension of her work. Her compositions evoke the quiet, persistent motion of natural forces—currents, reflections, and atmospheric shifts—inviting contemplation rather than immediacy.
Jill Sapiente by contrast, her expressionistic landscapes are built through bold, tactile layering. Using palette knives, brushes, and even her hands, she pushes and pulls paint across the canvas, creating surfaces that feel alive with motion. Her work is driven by an exploration of light—how it illuminates and fractures across form—resulting in compositions that shimmer with energy. Drawing from direct encounters with the landscape through sketching and photography, Sapiente translates observation into emotional experience, offering viewers a sensorial connection to place.
Together, Marois and Sapiente offer two complementary interpretations of nature in motion: one grounded in physicality and gesture, the other in flow and reflection. Where Marois’ paintings unfold more slowly, revealing layers of meaning over time, Sapiente’s surfaces pulse with energy and immediacy. Their dialogue creates a dynamic tension within the exhibition—between force and stillness, materiality and metaphor, instinct and intention.
Ultimately, Nature in Motion is an invitation to consider how we experience the natural world—not as a static image, but as a living, breathing presence. Through their distinct yet resonant practices, Marois and Sapiente remind us that nature is not only something we observe, but something we move within, remember, and carry with us.
