Infusions: The Paralleled Process presents a collection of works by Toronto-based abstract artist Simon Zhang, whose practice is defined by a continual negotiation between intuition and intention, spontaneity and structure. Through layered compositions that combine ink, rice paper, and acrylic, Zhang creates immersive abstract works that emerge through a distinctive methodology developed over decades of experimentation.

At the centre of the exhibition is Zhang’s original artistic framework, The Paralleled Process—a three-stage approach through which independent visual events evolve toward a unified whole. Beginning with the simultaneous creation of expressive acrylic surfaces and spontaneous ink compositions on rice paper, Zhang allows each element to unfold instinctively before entering a deliberate process of selection, transformation, and integration. The final compositions preserve the immediacy of gesture while revealing moments of careful refinement and balance.

For Zhang, infusion is more than the merging of materials; it is a philosophy of connection. Internal reflection meets external experience, and opposing forces—chaos and order, freedom and restraint, movement and stillness—are brought into dialogue. Drawing inspiration from atmosphere, changing light, texture, and the rhythms of the natural world, Zhang transforms sensory impressions into an abstract visual language that is both contemplative and dynamic.

Rather than depicting a specific landscape or narrative, each painting becomes an open field of perception and discovery. Through layered surfaces and evolving forms, viewers are invited to experience abstraction as an unfolding encounter—one where material, memory, and emotion converge.

With Infusions: The Paralleled Process, Simon Zhang offers a deeply immersive exploration of how artworks come into being, revealing abstraction not as a fixed image but as a living process of transformation.
