Robert Amirault is a Canadian representational painter known for his expressive plein air landscapes, seascapes, and figurative works that explore the nuanced effects of light and form. His paintings, created both on site and in studio, reflect a lifetime of creative pursuit—marked by technical mastery, compositional strength, and a deep appreciation for natural beauty. Collectors are drawn to his work for its balance of precision and painterly elegance.
Amirault began his artistic journey at the age of 15, studying through correspondence, including a formative experience with the Famous Artists School. By age 21, he was working as an illustrator for Simpsons Department Store in Halifax, where he began a 44-year career in advertising, eventually retiring as the company’s General Manager of Advertising and Sales Promotion in Toronto.
Throughout his corporate career, Amirault never stepped away from his artistic passion. He taught workshops, held annual shows, and consulted as Vice President, Creative, for a firm that produced textured reproductions of major American and European artists. These roles deepened his understanding of visual storytelling and fine art presentation.
Since 2000, Amirault has focused exclusively on his studio practice. Working primarily in oils and watercolours, he paints from life and studies his subjects deeply—capturing the “truth” of light as it falls on figures, faces, landscapes, and shorelines. A committed student of the craft, he continues to explore technique and composition through ongoing experimentation.
Robert Amirault’s work has been exhibited in galleries across Canada and the U.S., and is held in numerous private collections. With a career spanning decades and a continued commitment to artistic growth, Amirault’s paintings offer collectors timeless quality, authenticity, and a clear sense of place.
