(b. Hamilton, Ontario | Lives and works in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada)
Marleen Burgess is a Canadian multidisciplinary artist best known for her unique “plaster on canvas” creations—tactile works that blend texture, form, and colour into striking visual statements. Working across media including acrylic, pen and watercolour wash, and sculptural plaster, Marleen’s practice is rooted in decades of creative exploration, beginning with childhood art lessons at the Art Gallery of Hamilton.
Her art is informed by a deep appreciation of the Canadian landscape, particularly the raw beauty of Northern Ontario, where she first encountered plaster as a medium while working in North Bay. Since 2009, she has refined this complex, evolving material into a signature visual language that balances abstract expression with representational form.
Marleen’s work ranges from vibrant abstracts to thoughtfully rendered depictions of natural elements, each piece offering a distinct perspective shaped by texture and mood. Her practice continues to evolve through workshops at the Grimsby Art Gallery and ongoing experimentation in her home studio.
Her recent exhibitions include the Grimsby Art Gallery, the Mann Gallery in St. Catharines, and the Niagara Pumphouse in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Collectors are drawn to her innovative use of materials, her bold surfaces, and her ability to transform simple media into highly expressive art.
