(b. South Korea | Lives and works in Ontario, Canada)
Jooyoung Jeon is a Korean-Canadian visual artist whose work reimagines traditional Korean folk art through a vibrant, contemporary lens. Working primarily in acrylics and mixed media, her paintings draw on the rich symbolic language of minhwa (Korean folk painting), infusing it with modern forms and a bold colour palette. For collectors, her art offers a compelling blend of cultural heritage, narrative depth, and aesthetic originality.
Originally from South Korea, Jooyoung studied Fine Art at the University of Suwon before working as a fashion designer for seven years. Her artistic journey has been shaped by life across global cities including Shanghai, London, and Macau. Since settling in Ontario, she has returned to her childhood dream of becoming a full-time artist, developing a practice that bridges traditional Korean motifs with contemporary themes.
In recent works, Jooyoung has incorporated traditional Korean materials such as bojagi (wrapping cloth) to explore the tension between concealment and revelation—inviting viewers to consider what is hidden versus what is seen. Her paintings carry cultural resonance and emotional nuance, appealing to collectors who value cross-cultural storytelling and visual symbolism.
Jooyoung Jeon has exhibited widely across Niagara and Southern Ontario, including solo exhibitions at Rodman Art Institute of Niagara and juried shows at St. Catharines City Hall and the Niagara Artists Centre. Her work has been featured in cultural festivals, performance-based installations, and juried group shows, gaining increasing recognition for its originality and expressive power.
