(b. Caithness, Scotland | Lives and works in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada)

Gwyneth M. Stark is a Scottish-Canadian multi-disciplinary artist whose expressive visual language draws from a decades-long career in scenic art and fine art practice. Her contemporary paintings blend technical mastery with emotional resonance—each work inviting collectors into a richly textured world shaped by theatre, memory, and place.

Educated at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts in London and the University of Alberta, Stark earned her Master of Visual Arts and went on to a distinguished career as Head of Scenic Art at the Shaw Festival and other Canadian institutions. Over the past 35 years, she has maintained an active studio practice alongside her work in theatre, with recent exhibitions including the Agora Gallery in Stratford and the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto, where she received Honourable Mention.

Now painting full-time in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Stark’s work is informed by her time in Scotland, England, and Western Canada. Her expressive landscapes and narrative-inflected pieces reflect both an academic approach and a deeply intuitive process. Collections of her work can be found at institutions including the University of Alberta, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and in private collections across Canada, the U.K., and the U.S.

Collectors are drawn to Stark’s ability to balance composition and emotion, gesture and structure—bringing a theatre-maker’s sense of drama and a painter’s sense of poetry to each canvas.
