Dr. Chandi Jayawardena, DPhil

Dr. Chandi Jayawardena is a Canadian-Sri Lankan artist and writer whose work is shaped by his global perspective and a passion for storytelling through visual art. With extensive travels to over 100 countries, Chandi’s creative journey is a reflection of cultural diversity and personal experience, making his artwork deeply layered and narratively rich.

Chandi’s formal training in visual arts spans several continents. He studied under renowned mentors in Sri Lanka, continued his development at the University of Guyana, the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica, and George Brown College in Canada. He is currently pursuing further academic studies in studio art at Brock University.

Since his first solo exhibition in 1994, Chandi has participated in 17 solo and 40 group exhibitions in Sri Lanka, Guyana, Jamaica, and Canada. His mixed-media and narrative-based works have earned him both local and international recognition. A committed cultural leader, he previously served as Vice President of the St. Catharines and Area Arts Council and is now President of the St. Catharines Art Association and a Board Director at the Niagara Falls Art Gallery.

Through painting, writing, and community advocacy, Chandi continues to explore how lived experience shapes visual expression, using his art to promote dialogue, connection, and cultural appreciation. His works are appreciated by collectors who value cross-cultural perspectives and narrative-driven, globally inspired visual art.
