Sakis Mits is a Canadian artist known for his vibrant, large-scale encaustic paintings—works that capture a moment of youthful energy, bold exploration, and painterly experimentation. His practice flourished in the early 2000s when he was represented by the Moore Gallery in Toronto and earned critical acclaim for his luminous, organic compositions. In a 2000 Globe and Mail review, art critic Gary Michael Dault described Mits’ paintings as “…lush encaustics on board, arrangements of hotly coloured, amoeba-like shapes… embedded, suspended in the lens-like wax… The colour is opulent.”

Working in encaustic, one of the world’s oldest painting techniques, Mits developed a refined and evolved approach that merges antiquity with contemporary abstraction. Encaustic—pigment fused with molten wax—is a notoriously demanding medium, requiring both precision and physicality. The resulting works possess a rare, luminous depth that cannot be achieved with other materials.

Though he has paused his art-making to travel extensively—exploring over 59 countries and counting—his paintings remain highly collectable. Each work offers a window into a dynamic period of his creative life, brimming with vitality and expressive freedom. These pieces, now available are ideal for collectors drawn to bold, materially rich abstraction at an exceptional value.
