Ronald Boaks’ work merges bold abstraction with emotional nuance, creating compositions that are at once visually arresting and deeply reflective.
Ronald Boaks (b. 1951, Newmarket, Ontario, Canada) has been a vital presence in Canadian contemporary art since the 1970s. A graduate of Sheridan College’s creative art program in 1975, Boaks first gained national attention through Forum 76 at the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal. Since then, he has maintained a prolific and multifaceted practice spanning painting, sculpture, collage, and photography—all grounded in a core belief that art must be alive in the present moment.
Often described as a Romantic Modernist, Boaks merges painterly intuition with geometric precision in richly layered works that evoke balance, beauty, desire, and joy. He describes this ongoing pursuit as “Balancing Beauty and the Sublime”, a personal and artistic tension he refers to as The Romantic Modernist's Dilemma. His vivid abstract compositions resonate with collectors for their emotional immediacy, formal innovation, and philosophical depth.
Boaks’ early works—several of which are held in the Mann Collection—are especially prized for their clarity of vision and bold experimentation. These foundational pieces reflect the beginnings of an artistic journey that continues to evolve with integrity and curiosity. Since 2015, Boaks has lived and worked in Niagara-on-the-Lake, where he operates Ronald Boaks Collectibles, a studio-gallery housed in a renovated cow barn surrounded by gardens and sculpture.
His work is represented in major public and private collections, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Museum London, the Bank of Montreal, and the Four Seasons Hotel in London, England. A rare selection of his formative works is available through the Mann Collection, offering an exceptional opportunity to acquire pieces that reflect the artist’s early mastery and enduring vision.
